Just got word that Jonathan has signed on for a part in Woody Allen’s next film. Production starts in July. More from movies.com:
Woody Allen Flick Gets Cast
Woody Allen, a director never content to rest on his laurels (even when some critics might wish that he would), has begun casting his upcoming summer movie project. Kate Winselt, Emily Mortimer, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are the first actors to sign on for the film, according to Variety.
Interestingly, the notoriously reclusive and Manhattan-centric auteur has decided to film the as-yet-untitled movie entirely outside of New York, primarily, if not entirely, in London. The story, though (as usual) still unannounced, will reportedly focus on the upper class of the British capital.
Allen told Variety, “I have a great admiration for English actors and actresses and have used them at every opportunity over the years, but now I won’t have to import them to New York. ? I only hope I can live up to the high standards of British movies I grew up with.”
Filming is expected to take place in July and August. Allen’s next film to hit theaters, Melinda and Melinda, likely to be released this fall, has wrapped. Will Ferrell stars.
Thanks to Shelia and Mr. Crofts. A bit more film festival news to pass on. Outfest 2004 is having a special screening of “Velvet Goldmine” on July 10 at 6:45pm in Los Angeles. They are giving director Todd Haynes the Outfest Achievement Award to open the festival. Todd will be at the screening in person. You can purchase tickets for $10 online.
Miramax has pushed back “B. Monkey” once again for release September 9 of this year. Will it appear before the century is over? I wonder.
“Velvet Goldmine” is nominated for 2 BAFTA’s for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup/Hair. It should win both. Sandy Powell won an Oscar for her work in that other Miramax film, but it was nice she mentioned “VG” in her speech and it was hilarious that Whoppi Goldberg attempted to dress like Brian Slade. At the Independent Spirit Awards, “VG” did win for best cinematography! Congrats to Maryse Alberti’s fine work! Speaking of “VG”, it is due out on video May 11th here in the US.
In the latest Vanity Fair magazine, you can find a sneak peek of images of the cast from “Titus”, including Jonathan. Currently, Jonathan is in London for a couple of months filming “Gormanghast”. No details yet on what this is. And lastly, Jonathan was up for British Newcomer of the Year by the London Critics Circle Awards. I have not found out any details on when this happens or if it already did. Hope to find out more soon.
Visit E! Online to see their feature on Johnny. B.Monkey is set for release Feb. 26 - let’s see if that happens.
The Loss of Sexual Innocence debuted at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. It is set to be released on May 21. Nice date. Check out the Sundance Channel page on the film. They give much praise to Jonathan and so does Variety’s review, where they say, “The most emotionally touching chapter is the sexual exploration of teenager Nic (splendidly evoked by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) with Susan (Kelly MacDonald), capturing with humor and poignancy the timidity and awkwardness of the first kiss, the first touch.”
Congrats goes out to Todd Haynes and company for nabbing three nominations for the 14th annual Spirit Awards. Velvet Goldmine got nods for Best Feature Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography. The ceremony is be held on March 20th in Santa Monica and broadcast live on the Independent Film Channel.
2 covers in one month!!! That’s right, Jonny is on the cover of December Interview and American Cinematographer! Also, Sky International has a feature on Jonny and November Neon has a feature on “Velvet Goldmine”.
And speaking of that glam rock jewel, Girl Cosmetics has come out with their Velvet Goldmine collection which premiered in various Bloomingdales around the country. The line was developed by Todd Haynes’ brother Shawn along with the film’s makeup artist Peter King. There is a silver-and-gold glitter highlighter duo, a black glitter pencil eyeliner, four eye-shadow trios and six lip creams. And the slogan on the packaging is “Tested on Rock Stars - Not Animals” - love it! Prices range from $10-$27 and if in some stores if you buy over $25 you receive a movie poster, a boa, and a cassette sampler of songs from the film. Very cool! You can also order a Velvet Goldmine t-shirt or poster in Miramax’s store - Jonny’s mug graces both of them! While the film has not done as well as expected, it is still playing in select theaters across the US. If you want to find a theater playing this amazing film near you, visit Movielink.
Stay tuned to Tuesday’s Entertainment Tonight’s episode for coverage of the “Velvet Goldmine” premiere. Not sure about other entertainment shows, so be on the alert. Jonathan is featured in latest Empire Magazine as well.
Jonny’s visit to the Cork Film Festival allowed him to show off his new hair style, longish and blonde, that he’s sporting for “Titus”. For those in the UK, you get to enjoy 3 Jonny films opening this week - “Finbar” is being released along with “The Governess” and “Velvet Goldmine”.
“The Governess” is being shown this Friday at the Cork Film Festival and this Saturday, “Velvet Goldmine” will be shown. Jonathan is going to be there, managing to get away for 2 days from filming. His family will be attending and the showing for “VG” is already sold out!
Jonny or “Velvet Goldmine” is featured in the latest Time Magazine, November Jane, UK Red, UK J17, Elle, Art Forum and i-D magazines - lots of new images will be coming soon to the gallery section that’s for sure! Ewan McGregor is on the cover of November Uncut magazine with a large feature on “Velvet Goldmine” inside. Jonathan will next month be filming a new movie in Ireland called “Last September”, to be directed by Deborah Warner and produced by Yvonne Thunder. Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon also star.
“Velvet Goldmine” will be opening October 23 in the UK and the soundtrack will be released in the US November 9. There’s a “Velvet Goldmine” article in the latest Select Magazine basically blasting the film’s bad buzz. Bad buzz? Winning an award at Cannes and the Edinburgh Film Festival does not sound like bad buzz now does it? Also has an interview with Todd Haynes.
