Aug 5, 2008, 12:00 AM ETIn her first major acting gig, British soul and R&B singer Joss Stone is joining the cast of Showtime’s drama “The Tudors” for its upcoming third season.
Stone will play Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of Henry VIII (Rhys Meyers).
A daughter of a German nobleman, Anne was betrothed to Henry in a marriage treaty between the Cleves Court and the king’s chancellor after Henry was shown a portrait of her.
Upon Anne’s arrival to England, Henry was disappointed in her looks and soon found a legal way to have the marriage annulled.
According to Showtime, the upcoming season of the racy royal drama will follow the king as he weds third queen Jane Seymour (Anita Briem) and then Anne of Cleves.

From The Hollywood Reporter:
Showtime taps ‘Tudors’ for 3rd season
By Kimberly Nordyke
April 22, 2008Just a few weeks after its sophomore bow, Showtime’s “The Tudors” has gotten a third-season pickup.
Production will begin June 16 in Dublin, Ireland, with series star Jonathan Rhys Meyers set to return as King Henry VIII. The number of episodes has yet to be determined for Season 3, which will follow the king as he weds Jane Seymour (Anita Briem) and Anne of Cleves, but it’s scheduled for a 2009 premiere.
The news comes after Showtime recently reiterated its commitment to original programming. Following the news that the network would not be renewing its output deals with Viacom-owned Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM — which now will be launching a premium TV channel and VOD service in fall 2009 — Showtime is expected to invest some of the money earmarked for output deals into more original series. Along with “Tudors,” Showtime’s originals include “Dexter” and “Weeds.”
Showtime said Tuesday that “Tudors” is one of CBS Home Entertainment’s top-selling titles. Both the series and Rhys Meyers earned Golden Globe nominations this year.
” ‘The Tudors’ is now a fixture for us at Showtime, and we’re on our way to completing the entire saga of all six wives of Henry VIII,” Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt said.
“Tudors,” an Ireland-Canada co-production presented in association with Peach Arch Entertainment, is written by creator Michael Hirst, who also executive produces with Morgan O’Sullivan for Octagon Films, Benjamin Silverman and Teri Weinberg for Reveille Prods., Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan for Working Title Films and Sheila Hockin.

Tudor reign continues on BBC Two
BBC News, 17 October 2007The second series of popular historical TV drama The Tudors will be shown next year, the BBC has confirmed.
Created by Michael Hirst, writer of the film Elizabeth, the series was shot in Ireland over the summer with Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the young Henry VIII.
Hirst promises “old and new conflicts, both at court and outside it”.
Launched earlier this month, The Tudors has been a ratings success for BBC Two with an average audience of 3.2 million viewers tuning in each week.
The series also features Sam Neill as Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Jeremy Northam as Sir Thomas More and Maria Doyle Kennedy as Catherine of Aragon, Henry’s first wife.
‘Compulsory viewing’
The second season sees veteran actor Peter O’Toole join the cast as Pope Paul III.
“We are extremely pleased with our viewers’ positive reactions to The Tudors,” said George McGhee, controller of programme acquisitions.
“Henry VIII and his six wives are still compulsory viewing in the 21st century as portrayed by this young and excellent cast.”
Executive producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner also produced Elizabeth and its forthcoming sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
More on the good ratings for series one of “The Tudors” in the UK and Canada:
It delivered BBC2’s best Friday peak share for 13 weeks when it launched earlier this month, pulling in 3.2 million viewers and a 15% share - over a million more than the slot average.
The CBC notched impressive numbers for Showtime’s “The Tudors,” a Canadian-Irish co-production it pre-licensed. The miniseries about the early days of Henry VIII drew 957,000 viewers out of the gate, according to BBM/Nielsen Media Research, just short of the 1 million-viewer benchmark considered success in Canadian primetime.
