“Tangled” is finally being released in the US going straight to DVD and video. You can pre-order the DVD through Amazon.com now. It’s due for release January 14, 2003.
Fox Searchlight has put up a preview website for Bend It Like Beckham. It does not state when the official release date will be other than Spring 2003.
There is word that Jonathan may star in a London play sometime next year. According to a recent Irish Examiner article, it was stated that Jonathan will be in the West End production of Noel Coward’s “Hay Fever”. I have not been able to find any official statement or news about this possible upcoming production.
“Bend It Like Beckham” has been getting a lot of press attention. The film recently had a big London premiere. Jonathan did attend the premiere (I’ve added some photos in the Gallery). You can find contests, goodies, reviews and more at BBC Online (you can see Jonathan arriving in a video on that site and he is interviewed at around 40 minutes into the one hour special) and at the film’s official website.
In other cool news, Jonathan was recently awarded the Canal Grande Award for the Best Young Promising Actor at the Venice International Television Festival 2002 for “The Magnificent Ambersons”. Jonathan attended the festival and received his award. Thanks to Alec and Ronan for passing this info along. The festival jury had this to say about awarding Jonathan with this honor: “For his compelling depiction of a young man who has had everything and who lost everything.”
Lastly, there is a full page photo (from the Instyle photo shoot, nothing new) and small article on Jonathan in the May 2002 issue of UK Glamour magazine. And more good news for those in the UK, “Tangled” has been released on DVD. Still no word of when this might come to the States. Apparently “Tangled” is also out in a few other countries as a rental.
The Independent Film Channel is showing “The Tribe”! The remaining times it will be shown in May are: Wednesday, May 16 at 6AM, Tuesday, May 29 at 11:45PM and Wednesday, May 30 at 6AM. “Tangled” is having a rough go of things now that the film has been picked up by Miramax. Rachael Leigh Cook has mentioned in several interviews how the movie title was changed to “Tangled” in the first place and now about possible cuts requested that have frustrated her as a producer of the fim. Let’s hope all goes well and that “Tangled” does get a theatrical release.
Myriad Pictures is reporting that “Tangled” has been picked up by Miramax for distribution. The film’s soundtrack will reportedly feature music from Duran Duran, The Brand New Heavies and David Gray.
And no news on what Jonathan has decided to do for his next film project. Decisions, decisions…
Lastly, “Ride With The Devil” has finally been released in Japan and Jonathan is actually used in much of the promotional material. Isn’t that refreshing? Thanks to everyone who emailed about the Japanese official website.
The trailer for Tangled is now available at the official production company website. It’s definitely worth checking out to see plenty of Jonny. Thanks to Galliia for spreading this news around.

According to Myriad Pictures, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek, the composers of “Run Lola Run”, will be scoring “Tangled”. A promo was screened at London/MIFED. These are screenings set up in London and Milan in hopes to attract buyers for films in order to distribute them.
Also, if you happened to write Jonny a fan letter in the past, you may be in for a treat this Christmas. Jonny has sent out holiday cards to his fans (which you see above — thanks to Miki for this scan).
Jonny is back in Ireland. He has wrapped filming on both “Prozac Nation” and “Tangled”. Currently he is looking for his next role. It appears “Marlowe” isn’t going to be working out. You can catch some more amazing images of Jonny with Ewan McGregor in the August issue of Moviestar magazine (Japanese publication).
You can find Jonny articles or images in July W (thanks to Tiffany for letting me know), July Cosmo, and June Vogue. Jonny is currently in Toronto filming “Tangled”. The June 25 Toronto Star newspaper printed photos from the set. The full image is in the Gallery thanks to Elizabeth for sending to the site.
More news coming now on “Conspiracy of Weeds”. According to one of its production companies, Myriad Pictures, the project is now titled “Tangled” and principal photography starts on May 22. Jonathan will be playing the part of Alan, in a love triangle story with Shawn Hatosy and Rachael Leigh Cook. The summary from their page goes like this:
When David is found bruised, beaten and stumbling down a secluded road, the Police try to piece together the puzzle of what happened. We learn of the relationship between Jenny, the love of David’s life, and Alan, David’s best friend, and the love triangle that instigated the confrontation. Was it love, jealousy or the pre-meditated scheme of a deranged psychotic?
And you can currently check out a short review of “Gormenghast” in the May issue of Vanity Fair. Thanks to the lovely Heatherjune you can read it in the Press section.
Exciting news from Cannes! The Telegraph reported on May 13 that:
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is hotly tipped to star as Christopher Marlowe in a steamy new movie about the life of the 16th-century playwright that will be unveiled here early next week.
The £14 million film, to be called Marlowe, is being produced by Natural Nylon, the Soho-based company co-owned by Britpack actors Ewan McGregor, Jude Law, Sadie Frost, Johnny Lee Miller and Sean Pertwee.
The Hollywood star Michelle Pfeiffer is believed to be in the running to play Lady Audrey, the seductive wife of Marlowe’s patron Thomas Walsingham. The film will be directed by John Maybury, who has had many offers since his acclaimed Francis Bacon biopic Love Is The Devil.
Marlowe, to begin shooting in London in September, will focus on the five-year period between the performance of the playwright’s first work and his mysterious death at the age of 29 in a tavern brawl in 1593.
Natural Nylon originally envisaged Law in the title role but the star, nominated for a supporting actor Oscar for The Talented Mr Ripley, had to bow out reluctantly because of a scheduling clash. In September, he will begin acting duties on Steven Spielberg’s AI, a sci-fi extravaganza developed over 20 years by the late Stanley Kubrick.
Rhys-Meyers, most recently seen in the television production Gormenghast, is one of the hottest young stars around. He recently completed production on Conspiracy of Weeds opposite Rachel Leigh Cook and his up-coming projects include a film adaptation of the best-selling book Prozac Nation with Christina Ricci and Anne Heche. He will next appear on screen in September in Julie Taymor’s Titus, based on Titus Andronicus.
What’s that? “Conspiracy of Weeds” is already completed? That may not be the case, and for those in the UK, “Titus” is set for release September 1 according to Clear Blue Sky Productions (thanks Elaine).
Also be on the lookout for little tidbits in the UK press. Thanks to Lindsey who posted at the JRM board about two sightings, one in ES Magazine which came with the London Evening Standard on May 5 and the other a review and small image of “Ride With The Devil” in last Saturday’s The Information which comes with The Independent. ES Magazine had an article on sex appeal and Shane Watson wrote, “Jonathan Rhys-Meyers with his pillowboy looks is like the distilled essence of sexual attraction for both sexes, to be adored but not touched.”
