Myriad Pictures is reporting that “Tangled” has been picked up by Miramax for distribution. The film’s soundtrack will reportedly feature music from Duran Duran, The Brand New Heavies and David Gray.
And no news on what Jonathan has decided to do for his next film project. Decisions, decisions…
Lastly, “Ride With The Devil” has finally been released in Japan and Jonathan is actually used in much of the promotional material. Isn’t that refreshing? Thanks to everyone who emailed about the Japanese official website.
Exciting news from Cannes! The Telegraph reported on May 13 that:
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is hotly tipped to star as Christopher Marlowe in a steamy new movie about the life of the 16th-century playwright that will be unveiled here early next week.
The £14 million film, to be called Marlowe, is being produced by Natural Nylon, the Soho-based company co-owned by Britpack actors Ewan McGregor, Jude Law, Sadie Frost, Johnny Lee Miller and Sean Pertwee.
The Hollywood star Michelle Pfeiffer is believed to be in the running to play Lady Audrey, the seductive wife of Marlowe’s patron Thomas Walsingham. The film will be directed by John Maybury, who has had many offers since his acclaimed Francis Bacon biopic Love Is The Devil.
Marlowe, to begin shooting in London in September, will focus on the five-year period between the performance of the playwright’s first work and his mysterious death at the age of 29 in a tavern brawl in 1593.
Natural Nylon originally envisaged Law in the title role but the star, nominated for a supporting actor Oscar for The Talented Mr Ripley, had to bow out reluctantly because of a scheduling clash. In September, he will begin acting duties on Steven Spielberg’s AI, a sci-fi extravaganza developed over 20 years by the late Stanley Kubrick.
Rhys-Meyers, most recently seen in the television production Gormenghast, is one of the hottest young stars around. He recently completed production on Conspiracy of Weeds opposite Rachel Leigh Cook and his up-coming projects include a film adaptation of the best-selling book Prozac Nation with Christina Ricci and Anne Heche. He will next appear on screen in September in Julie Taymor’s Titus, based on Titus Andronicus.
What’s that? “Conspiracy of Weeds” is already completed? That may not be the case, and for those in the UK, “Titus” is set for release September 1 according to Clear Blue Sky Productions (thanks Elaine).
Also be on the lookout for little tidbits in the UK press. Thanks to Lindsey who posted at the JRM board about two sightings, one in ES Magazine which came with the London Evening Standard on May 5 and the other a review and small image of “Ride With The Devil” in last Saturday’s The Information which comes with The Independent. ES Magazine had an article on sex appeal and Shane Watson wrote, “Jonathan Rhys-Meyers with his pillowboy looks is like the distilled essence of sexual attraction for both sexes, to be adored but not touched.”
Jonny has finally picked his next project. It will be filming this summer in Canada. I’ll post more when I find out. Got word on another of Jonny’s projects, “Rake’s Progress”. This production has been put on hold due to possible financing problems. Lastly, the DVD for “Ride With The Devil” is available for pre-order over at Amazon.com, set for release on July 18th.
Read about the making of “Ride with the Devil” at Pitch Weekly (thanks to Joanna for sending this info along). And the official site for Ride With The Devil is pretty much open now with hardly anything mentioned about Jonathan. It’s like he’s not even in the movie even though his part is much more than a supporting role. Pretty irking…
Check out Jonathan’s own take on “Ride With The Devil” and his role in it at thisislondon.com.
The official site for Ride With The Devil will hopefully be opening soon as the November 24 limited release date draws near. “Ride With The Devil” premiered at the London Film Festival and has been getting all round rave reviews. The Irish Times mentioned that “effectively cast as the most dangerous and unhinged of them is the young Irish actor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers.”
Currently, you can preorder a copy of The Art of Gormenghast online (you can order from the US or other places internationally through Amazon.co.uk). This book will be providing insight into the making of this BBC miniseries and will feature profiles, images, preproduction designs and interviews with the cast and crew. It’s due out January 20. You can also preorder a video about the making of “Gormenghast”. This video will be in PAL format only which is not the same as North America’s VHS format. For those in the UK or with PAL formatted VCR’s, you can order this video for £19.99 via phone with a credit card. Call 01795 414731 and use the reference number BBCV6831. (Thanks to Lyle for that bit of info!)
Lastly, check out this excellent interview Jonathan did with Jonathan Ross from the BBC recently.
Lengthy article with new images in the UK’s Daily Mail Sunday Supplement recently. If I am able to get a hold of this, of course I’ll post this up.
Jonny was on Film 99 being interviewed by Jonathan Ross on November 2 and tomorrow morning will appear on the Big Breakfast over in the UK on Channel 4. He will also make appearances on ITV’s Big Screen and London Tonight, SKY TV’s Barry Norman’s Film Night, Movie Babylon, Showbix Weekly, and Channel 4’s T4. If anyone from the UK can make screen grabs of any of these appearances, please contact me. I’d love to be able to share this with fans from all over the world without access.
Also, Jonathan was picked as one of UK Cosmopolitan’s Sexiest Men in the World poll. He came in at number 34. And “Ride with the Devil” will be opening up the London Film Festival today and be released in theatres in the UK this Friday.
“Ride With The Devil” premiered recently at the Deuville Film Festival and there was a recent article on Ang Lee in the Los Angeles Times. It’s set for release around Thanksgiving time (late November) by USA films. “Ride” will also open up the London Film Festival on November 3.
“The Governess” is due out in select theaters July 31 - this Friday. And Jonny will be filming “Titus Andronicus” - a surreal comtemporary version of the Shakespeare play, co-starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange. Shooting reportedly begins this September in Rome, Italy. This is completely uncomfirmed right now. And lastly, Jonny’s character in “Ride With The Devil” is a bad guy - at least in terms of the novel the movie is based on. There are rumblings the film will be out in 1999 instead of this coming late fall.
Here’s some more info I found out about “To Live On”, now titled “Ride With the Devil”. Filming starts in Missouri this March and ends in April, with a tentative release date in the fall. Jewel will be playing the love interest of two young men, played by Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich, whose lives change during the aftermath of a year of fierce guerrilla warfare on the Kansas-Missouri border during the Civil War. The film is based on the novel “Woe to Live On” by David Woodrell that is currently out of print.
