Happy Now premieres

“Happy Now” is premiering at the Edinburgh Film Festival August 20 at 10pm. Tickets are £7. It is in competition. Thanks to alec757 for sending along this info. It is also going to be shown August 22 at 9pm. The official festival website has the following information about the film:

“This isn’t some film where zombies take revenge,” says Paddy Considine. We can?t be so sure. All grown up and gunning for political power in a small North Wales community, Considine and his best mate harbour a dark secret which seems to be coming back to haunt them. But can the daughter of a local woman (Susan Lynch) just returned from Alaska be the same girl the two lads buried fourteen years earlier? Only local policeman Ioan Gruffudd can solve the case with help from wrongly accused tramp Om Puri. A superb cast give this Telltale Heart a touch of class.

Thanks to Ann for also passing along that “The Disappearance of Finbar” has been rereleased for sale on video in the UK. Blackstar is selling it for £14.29. And thanks to alec757 once more for sending along this Orson Welles site that posted a favorable review of “The Magnificent Ambersons”.

Gormenghast airing in Canada

For those in Canada, “Gormenghast” will be re-airing on the Space Network on August 15, 22, 29 and September 5 at 8:30 PM ET. Thanks to Raine for passing this info along.

And coming from Rebecca, there is some corrected information about the “Titus” premiere. It will be premiering at the Edinburgh Film Festival August 26. The August 30 showing is a preview only. Jonathan will most likey not be attending either showing.

Ride With The Devil

“Ride With The Devil” premiered recently at the Deuville Film Festival and there was a recent article on Ang Lee in the Los Angeles Times. It’s set for release around Thanksgiving time (late November) by USA films. “Ride” will also open up the London Film Festival on November 3.

Lots of Jonny News

Visit E! Online to see their feature on Johnny. B.Monkey is set for release Feb. 26 - let’s see if that happens.

The Loss of Sexual Innocence debuted at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. It is set to be released on May 21. Nice date. Check out the Sundance Channel page on the film. They give much praise to Jonathan and so does Variety’s review, where they say, “The most emotionally touching chapter is the sexual exploration of teenager Nic (splendidly evoked by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) with Susan (Kelly MacDonald), capturing with humor and poignancy the timidity and awkwardness of the first kiss, the first touch.”

Congrats goes out to Todd Haynes and company for nabbing three nominations for the 14th annual Spirit Awards. Velvet Goldmine got nods for Best Feature Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography. The ceremony is be held on March 20th in Santa Monica and broadcast live on the Independent Film Channel.

Cork Film Festival

Jonny’s visit to the Cork Film Festival allowed him to show off his new hair style, longish and blonde, that he’s sporting for “Titus”. For those in the UK, you get to enjoy 3 Jonny films opening this week - “Finbar” is being released along with “The Governess” and “Velvet Goldmine”.

“The Governess” is being shown this Friday at the Cork Film Festival and this Saturday, “Velvet Goldmine” will be shown. Jonathan is going to be there, managing to get away for 2 days from filming. His family will be attending and the showing for “VG” is already sold out!

Off to Rome

Due to a delayed plane, Jonathan was late to the premiere of “Velvet Goldmine” at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Jonny recently did a lot of press in New York and London, so be on the look-out for interviews and features in the coming months. Right now, he is vacationing in Africa before he is off to Rome to film “Titus Andronicus”, which has been confirmed.

More Movie News

Recently learned that Jonny was in a film that was completed last April - “The Loss of Sexual Innocence”, starring Julian Sands and Saffron Burrows. Directed by the acclaimed Mike Figgis (”Leaving Las Vegas”, “One Night Stand”), the film is a non-linear collection of short stories about the phases and complexities of sexual activity. Jonny sure likes making films that deal with sex eh? The film was recently picked up by Sony Pictures Classics, who will release it here in the US. It will premiere at the upcoming Venice Film Festival and it’s US premiere will be at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Pretty cool!

Also it has been confirmed that Jonny has been cast as Chiron in the updated version of Shakespeare’s “Titus Andronicus” that will start filming this fall. Heard that Jonny has been in some episodes of British soap Eastenders recently. This sounds highly unlikely though.

Small image of Jonathan from “Velvet Goldmine” in the new issue of Premiere Magazine with Drew Barrymore on the cover. “VG” premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival August 16, opening the festival. Jonny, along with Ewan McGregor, Toni Collette, Christian Bale, and Todd Haynes attended. It’s US premiere will be at the New York Film Festival.

And lastly, it has finally been settled, Jonny’s last name is spelled - Rhys Meyers. No dash. The confusion of his last name leads me to believe the rumor that perhaps Rhys Meyes is not his real last name, but possibly Price as was suggested by a resident of Cork in my guestbook. Hmm…
