Appearances and awards

Jonathan attended Electric Picnic this past weekend, a music festival held in Dublin. The line-up included Belle and Sebastian, New Order, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, among many other bands and performers. And last night, Jonathan attended the GQ Men of the Year Awards, held at the Royal Opera House in London. Jonny was presented with the Lab Series Man of the Year award. The UK edition of GQ Magazine normally does a special issue on their Men of the Year so we’ll have to see how they’ll feature Jonny in the special issue. (Thanks to Shelia for the news.)

A couple more media sightings: There is a one page interview with photo in the new issue of the British edition of Elle Magazine. Drew Barrymore is on the cover for the special 21st birthday issue of Elle. And there’s a photo of Jonathan at Electric Picnic in the Irish Daily Mail newspaper from September 4, 2006.

Jonathan honored in Cork

Last week, Jonathan was honored in Cork, Ireland for his Golden Globe win. Cork held a civic reception in his honor and to award him with the Cork Person of the Month award. You can see video of this from RTE News (scroll down to “Rhys Meyers honoured in home town”, you need Real Player to view the file). Jonathan also joined Cillian Murphy to launch the 4th Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.

Esquire, TV, awards

Jonathan is featured in a huge photo spread in the new issue of Esquire magazine (the January 2006 US issue). And he made another appearance with his “Match Point” co-star Scarlett Johansson in an interview on the Today Show’s Saturday edition this past weekend. And lastly, Jonathan has won Best Actor in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television at the 10th annual Satellite Awards. His co-star Randy Quaid won Best Supporting Actor and “Elvis” won Best Miniseries. Congratulations Jonathan!

Emmy Awards

Jonathan attended yesterday’s Emmy Awards and looked splendid on the red carpet. “Elvis” did not manage to win any awards. Jonathan also attended 2 pre-Emmy parties: Entertainment Weekly’s pre-Emmy party and the 3rd annual BAFTA tea party, both held on September 17.

Nominated for an Emmy

Back from vacation and to report the great news that Jonathan has been nominated for an Emmy! Elvis received a total of 6 nominations for Casting, Costumes, Supporting Actor (Randy Quaid), Supporting Actress (Camryn Manheim), Outstanding Miniseries, and Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie for Jonathan’s portrayal of Elvis Presley. The 57th annual Emmy awards will be telecast on September 18 at 8pm on CBS. Congratulations to Jonny and the entire cast and crew of “Elvis”!

In other news, Jonathan is now in Rome where production has started on “Mission Impossible III”.

Match Point at Cannes

Jonathan attended this year’s Cannes Film Festival to promote Woody Allen’s new film, “Match Point”. It premiered on May 12 to glowing reviews. Jonathan received the Chopard Trophy for his work in the film as outstanding newcomer. He also attended the premiere of the final Star Wars film at Cannes with girlfriend Reena Hammer.

The CBS 4 hour miniseries “Elvis” debuted to excellent ratings and reviews poured in praising Jonathan’s portrayal of Elvis Presley. There is much Emmy buzz now!

Jonathan’s next film project, “Mission Impossible III” is set to start filming in August. No word yet on what character he’ll be playing. Jonathan is also rumored to be in talks to star in Nicolas Roeg’s next project, “Adina”. Jonny worked with Roeg years ago for “Samson and Delilah”.

The Lion in Winter Golden Globe nods

“Vanity Fair” will released on DVD in the US on February 1. You can preorder it on Amazon.com. Golden Globe nominations were announced today and “The Lion in Winter” got 3 nominations for best mini-series or motion picture made for television, best actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for television for Glenn Close, and best actor in a mini-series or motion picture made for television for Patrick Stewart.

Featured in Cosmo

Jonathan is featured in the December issue of US Cosmopolitan, the scan of which is already in the Gallery of this site. Jonathan attended the premiere of “Vanity Fair” at the London Film Festival and presented an award at the British Fashion Awards last week.

Bend it Like Beckham attention

Award season is upon us and “Bend It Like Beckham” has been getting some attention. It made Entertainment Weekly’s top 10 films of the year at #5. The Editor’s Guild announced it’s nominations and “Bend It Like Beckham” received a nod for Best Film Editing (Comedy). It’s has been nominated for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) at this year’s Golden Globe awards. The awards will be telecast on January 25.

Some good news about “Vanity Fair” to announce. It will have it’s world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with a possible Fall 2004 release in theatres.

New role as Cassander

Jonathan has accepted the role of Cassander in Oliver Stone’s upcoming project “Alexander”. Rehearsals start late August in Morocco. Filming has just wrapped on “Vanity Fair”, a day past his birthday. And while Jonathan has been invited to attend the premiere of “The Tesseract” in Japan, time may not permit him to attend.

“Bend It Like Beckham” recently won for Best Sports Movie at the 11th annual ESPY Awards. You may have noticed more ads on TV lately for the movie… after all this time in limited release (it was first released in a handful of theatres in the US back in March!) Fox Searchlight is releasing “Bend It Like Beckham” in wider release on August 1. It should be hitting more theatres then ever before. It’s already made over $26 million at the US box office with an over $39 million overseas gross. Getting a wide release after so long means Fox has faith this movie can reach an even larger audience.
