Johnny come early

Dublin Daily, May 15, 2003

Cork-born actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers has the sensual, androgynous looks of a Calvin Klein model. Erin McCafferty got up close and personal with the movie star.

There’s a rumour doing the rounds at the moment that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is set to become the next James Bond.

The 25-year-old from Cork thinks that’s hilarious. “I don’t know where that rumour came from,” he laughs. “There is absolutely no truth to it. I have never even been asked to go for a screen test for the part. I have to admit it’s a nice thought though,” he hastens to add.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is charming. Notoriously private, he regularly shies away from interviews. When he does open up however, he is honest, funny and surprisingly unaffected by his fast-growing fame.

Blessed with perfect bone structure, he has a refined and sensitive face.

It’s no wonder the word “beautiful” is often used to describe him.

This is the Cork man who is fast becoming one of the hottest properties in Hollywood. He’s not yet 26 yet but is presently making his 30th film and has worked with many of Hollywood’s best directors and actors.

In the past he has glammed it up in Velvet Goldmine, gone gothic in Gormenghast and shot the Big Fella in Michael Collins. He even had to turn down a part in Gangs Of New York because he was too busy. At present he is in London rehearsing for a part in Vanity Fair, which also stars Jeremy Irons and Jim Broadbent.

“The past few years have been a bit heavy,” he says. “I’ve gone from one film to another in a short space of time. Thirty films in seven years is quite a lot and it leaves little time for anything else.

“At the moment I don’t live anywhere in particular. I just live from a suitcase in whatever location I’m filming. I do own an apartment in Southern Morocco, and I’ve bought a house in Cork which my mother lives in but to be honest I don’t get home as often as I’d like.

“I do miss Ireland,” says Jonathan. “I miss the craic and I miss knowing what’s going on. I see my old friends so little and more and more I find when we do catch up that they have moved on. It’s hard in that respect but I shouldn’t complain. I’m aware that I’ve been very lucky so far.

Some would call it luck but others put his success down to a special talent.

Rhys Meyers was first spotted by a talent scout in a pool hall in Cork at the tender age of 16 and was asked to audition for War Of The Buttons. He didn’t get that part, but he did get a part in a Knorr commercial. “I’d rather forget about that,” he laughs.

Since then he’s has starred in one great film after another and his reputation as an actor has grown. He is particularly noted for his screen presence.

“Even though I’ve done all these films I don’t feel famous,” says Jonathan.

“I always feel like I’m just going out and doing a job. I still feel like an underdog.

The trappings of fame clearly do not affect him. “The fame thing really doesn’t matter to me,” he says. “I never wanted to be a celebrity. It just happened. At the end of the day I’m looking for longevity.

“Of course I have some desire for money because I have to live but it’s not important to me either.

“I could never live in Hollywood for instance because over there the bottom line is the dollar and that’s just not me.

“As for being called a sex symbol, well you should have seen me at 11 o’clock this morning,” he laughs. “I don’t take any of that stuff too seriously. I have three brothers at home who would take me down a peg or two if I did.

“They’re all musicians you know. They tell me they’ve got real talent!”

If he wasn’t an actor, Jonathan would like to be writing short stories for children. “I couldn’t write a screenplay,” he says. “I’d find it too frustrating.

“I prefer to act. When I’m not acting I try to relax but I’m not very good at it,” he says.

“I read, play music, and go the pub, all the usual things. I’ve never been very good at relaxing though. You could put me in a flotation tank and I’d still manage to be jittery.

“I remember acting with Glenn Close in The Lion In Winter. She helped me a lot. She told me not to try so hard. She said, ‘Do absolutely nothing’.

“These days I’m practising being still. As a leading man I need to be solid and relaxed,” he says frankly.

“I love what I do for a living most of the time. Sometimes it’s a pain in the arse but at the end of the day I’m a lucky bastard.”

Vanity Fair details

Jonathan will be traveling to Japan in August for the premiere of “The Tesseract”. He is currently filming a new movie, “Vanity Fair”. This high profile project co-stars Reese Witherspoon, Jim Broadbent, and Rhys Ifans. It’s being directed by Mira Nair. “Vanity Fair” is an adaption of the William Thackeray novel by the same name. If you live close to Bath, you can audition to be an extra. The movie is being shot in Bath for one week of filming in June. For more details, read the article on This Is Bath. The plot summary from that article on this movie is: “The story is set during the Napoleonic Wars and revolves around the rise and fall of Becky Sharp, an impoverished but beautiful young woman played by Witherspoon, and Amelia Sedley, the pampered daughter of a rich City merchant.”

The Overseas Film Group will be holding screenings of “Octane” at this year’s Cannes Film Festival starting May 16. They will also be holding special promo premieres of “The Tesseract” and “The Emperor’s Wife”.

Release date mix ups

Made a mistake in the last update. “The Tesseract” is being released in Japan this fall, not “Octane”. “Octane” did recently premiere at the American Film Market Festival on Feb 22, 2003. This festival is a place for a lot of films to find distribution deals. There’s a lot of rumors running around that Jonathan screen tested for the James Bond role. There is no confirmation regarding this and I’d take any news reports about this with a grain of salt. Every week, you hear of some actor who is up for the role. It’s as bad as the endless search for the new Superman. Thanks to everyone who sent in an email regarding this.

Bend It Like Beckham doing well at the box office

Jonathan is featured in the April 2003 issue of L’Uomo Vogue with Daniel Day Lewis on the cover. Also, apparently “Octane” will be released in Japan this coming fall.

“Bend It Like Beckham” has been doing very well at the US box office so far. Each week, it’s being released in more theatres and steadily increasing it’s box office take. So far, in 5 weeks of release, it’s earned $4.2 million dollars. It’s now playing on just 216 screens with a very high per screen average, lots of press hype, and plenty of positive reviews. You can track its box office climb at Box Office Mojo.

Bend It Like Beckham now out

“Bend It Like Beckham” is now out in limited release in the US! Unfortunately, “Prozac Nation” is not coming out this Friday. Instead it is looking like it will be released in June instead according to Miramax’s website. Let’s hope Mixamax does not push back this film once again and that it might finally make it to theatres.

Jonathan as King Philip of France

Lots of cool news to report… First off, Jonathan has another movie to add to this credits. This time it’s a Hallmark Entertainment produced remake of “The Lion In Winter” that will air on the US cable network Showtime in late 2003. Jonathan stars as King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton played this role in the original award winning film). The movie also stars Glenn Close and Patrick Stewart. You can found out more information at an unofficial website for the original film and at the Hallmark Entertainment website. The character Jonathan plays is described as “venomous” in the synopsis on the Hallmark website.

The production website for the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Last Unicorn and IMDB have now listed Jonathan as part of the cast. Here’s what the production website had to say about Jonathan: “We have also the pleasure to announce that Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is willing to be Schmendrick the Magician. His incredible versatile and inspired acting style will add to the character humour, depth, passion and unforgettable moments.” The film is not scheduled to start production until this June with a possibly release date in December 2004. Christopher Lee and Mia Farrow are also to star. If you have not read this classic fantasy book, Schmendrick the Magician is one of the main roles and Jonathan is perfectly cast for this.

Fox Searchlight has finally put up an official website for Bend It Like Beckham. It opens March 12 in 6 theatres but will be opening in more theatres gradually. To find out where it will be playing, visit the Fox Searchlight website. It has also been confirmed that the film has not been dubbed. Only the trailer was altered.

“Prozac Nation” is also due for release March 14th. Nothing new has been posted on the Miramax website in months… but plenty of websites have the release date listed. Check out Moviefone to keep an eye on what theatres it may play in.

Nominations for Bend It Like Beckham

“Bend It Like Beckham” has recieved 3 nominations for the Empire Magazine Awards (Best Newcomer for Parminder Nagra, Best British Actress for Kiera Knightly, and Best British Film) and 1 nomination for a BAFTA for Outstanding British Film. “Bend It Like Beckham” is also making the rounds around the US playing in various film festivals like the Miami International Film Festival being held Feb. 21 – March 2. Watch out for advertisements and reviews of this film in various magazines out now like Elle Girl (thanks to Robby for the sighting on this) and Seventeen.

US trailer for Bend It Like Beckham

You can now view the new US trailer for Bend It Like Beckham online! Be warned, it does seem they have changed some of the slang and words from the original version of the film unfortunately.

Bend It Like Beckham release date
