Playing for Keeps By Paul Byrne Irish Examiner, April 13, 2002 Having Made His Name Playing Scary Monsters And Super Creeps, Jonathan Rhys Meyers Welcomed The Challenge of Portraying “A Regular Kind of Guy” in The British Comedy Bend it Like Beckham. He Talks to Paul Byrne About Stereotyping, Working For The Yankee Dollar, And Seducing Britney Spears. When I first met Jonathan Rhys Meyers for his debut leading role in the feature film The Disappearance of Finbar back in 1996, to say he was wide-eyed and innocent would...

“Bend It Like Beckham” has been getting a lot of press attention. The film recently had a big London premiere. Jonathan did attend the premiere (I’ve added some photos in the Gallery). You can find contests, goodies, reviews and more at BBC Online (you can see Jonathan arriving in a video on that site and he is interviewed at around 40 minutes into the one hour special) and at the film’s official website. In other cool news, Jonathan was recently awarded the Canal Grande Award for the Best Young...

The Mirror

Jonny Goes Round the Bend By Pauline Mcleod The Mirror, April 12, 2002 Jonathan Rhys Meyers, star of footie drama Bend It Like Beckham, longs to do a Hollywood blockbuster Considering Jonathan Rhys Meyers had been very drunk the previous night he is decidedly chipper. He’d planned to watch the Oscars live on TV in the small hours, but woke up on the floor of his swanky Italian hotel suite, having slept through the whole thing. He’s got good reason for feeling upbeat, though. On his way home to...

Bend It Like Beckham

Get those teenage kicks by Hannah Mcgill The Herald (Glasgow, Scotland), April 11, 2002 Movies about teenagers haven’t been too inspiring of late, thanks to the dominance of American Pie and its countless imitators. Rich pickings indeed for those who enjoy giggling at vomit gags and having their homophobia reinforced – but not much going on for more complex organisms. A warm welcome, then, to two films that address the trials of the teenage years in very different but equally refreshing ways. Alfonso Cuaron’s Y Tu Mama Tambien takes...

He spent time in an Irish orphanage, was permanently expelled from school, and then, hard up and hungry, he started stealing. Fortunately, when he was 17 he was spotted by a casting agent while in a local pool hall and his acting career took off. Since then, Jonathan’s starred in more than 20 films alongside actors...

Bend It Like Beckham

Bend It Like Beckham by Derek Elley Variety, April 1 – 7, 2002 An Anglo-Indian girl gets to realize her dream after meeting a blonde English tomboy in “Bend It Like Beckham,” a pleasantly amusing comedy set in the world of women’s amateur soccer. As in her previous two features, “Bhaji on the Beach” and “What’s Cooking?,” writer-helmer Gurinder Chadha assembles a gallery of broadly played stereotypes into a movie about social attitudes that’s more rooted in small-screen sitcom than anything deeper. With crossover appeal to Indian communities as...

Bend It Like Beckham reviews are good

Some good and bad news… First, the bad… the release date for “Prozac Nation” has apparently been pushed back to January 24, 2003. Now on to some good… “Bend It Like Beckham” is due in theatres in the UK on April 12, not April 19. So those in the UK get to see this even sooner. There is going to possibly be a premiere for the film in Leicester Square, London on April 11. No further details are known. For a peek at a couple of trailers, visit Cinemas...
