W Magazine

High Gothic By James Fallon W Magazine, July 2000 “Couldn’t you just die for those lips?” says Toni Collete of her close friend and former flame Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. Though often cast for his good looks, Rhys-Meyers, 22, finally gives proof of his acting mettle as the villainous Steerpike in the BBC’s production of Mervyn Peake’s Gothic trilogy “Gormenghast” (airing on BBC America beginning June 10 and again on PBS in late fall). “He’s a real 21st-century boy,” raves the program’s director, Andy Wilson. “He’s got the febrile...

Vogue

Go, Johnny, Go By Sarah Phelps Vogue, June 2000 With a dark star turn in a new phantasmagoric BBC miniseries, actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers gives another spellbinding performance. Within an artfully shabby room in London’s Groucho Club, Jonathan Rhys Meyers is clutching his interview survival kit- a large glass of milk and cigarettes- and radiating tension. When not gulping milk or smoking (which he does with the enthusiasm of a starved man), he traps his hands between his knees to keep them forcibly still. Some part of him is...

(Thanks to Bridge on sending me this info).

Gormenghast

NEXT STOP, WONDERLAND by Laura Jacobs Vanity Fair, May 2000 the BBCs four-part fantasy-scape It begins with a royal birth that looks like the Mad Hatter’s tea party. Then it cuts to the kingdom’s kitchen, a pig-squealing, sweltering hell from which a slim young man escapes in search of light. In these antic, frantic first minutes you may be tempted to change the channel. Don’t. It takes time to get your bearings in “Gormenghast.” What is “Gormenghast”?! It’s king Author’s court seen through Lewis Carrol’s looking glass. It’s Shakespeare’s...
