Actor Rhys Meyers sentenced for drunken French fracas

AFP – A French court Wednesday handed Irish film star Jonathan Rhys Meyers a one-month suspended sentence and ordered him to pay a 1,000-euro fine for a drunken altercation with police at a Paris airport.

The 34-year-old actor, known for his roles in BBC television production “The Tudors” and the films “Match Point” and “Bend It Like Beckham”, was not in court for the ruling.

Rhys Meyers was arrested in a bar at Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport in June 2009 and charged with being drunk and disorderly after he struck a barman and insulted three police officers.

The court in suburban Bobigny said Rhys Meyers was “extremely aggressive” and threatened to pay to have the officers and their families killed.

After being taken into custody and sobering up, he apologised to the officers and said he was suffering from alcoholism, the court said. He admitted to being drunk but said he did not fully recall the events.

The court said Rhys Meyers had compensated his victims in the case, without providing details.

His lawyer Vincent Toledano had pleaded for the court to dismiss the charges, saying Rhys Meyers was “a fragile man” and a “fairly weak person” who “suffers… from his demons.”

He later described the sentence as “harsh” and said Rhys Meyers had been “harmed by his fame”.

An Irish court in 2007 dropped similar charges against Rhys Meyers after he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly at Dublin airport.

The JRMfansite does not condone the behavior reported about this two year old incident in Paris. Alcoholism is a disease but it does not excuse his behavior and he’s now been punished. Death of the director Glenio Bonder

After a long and painful illness Glenio Bonder died today November 10th 2011, at the age of 55 years. Delux Productions and the entire team who worked with Glenio are appalled by this sad event.

Glenio Bonder was a graduate of the National Diplomatic School Itamary (Brazil) and had doctorate from Tokyo University ICU (Japan) and from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro(Brazil).

First a diplomat, he has been the Brazilian representative at the United Nations.

Glenio Bonder has had a career as a still photographer in fashion and advertising and has directed more than a hundred commercials. He directed a documentary on Albert Cohen for French television, which had allowed him to adapt his masterpiece “Belle du Seigneur”.

We will hold in memory this so talented and deeply human friend.

A famous cathedral needs to find €2m for its future upkeep.

Christ Church in Dublin, a major tourist attraction, requires an initial cash injection of €1m for essential stonework repairs to its famous bell tower and another €1m for refurbishment of its Chapter House.

Yesterday, model Rosanna Davison, dancer Michael Flatley, singer Roger Whittaker, actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers and a host of well known names got behind a donation drive for an upcoming auction aimed at securing its future.

The historic bell tower boasts the largest number of bells in the world — a total of 19 — producing a sound unrivalled anywhere. But it is under serious threat from leaks.

“Literally, (without the required repairs) the outward stone would just decay away and rot the timbers just like in any building. This hasn’t been attended to since the reordering of the cathedral in 1870,” said the Dean.

The cathedral’s Chapter House at the Dame Street end also needs to be repointed, on top of other conservation works.

In order to raise the money, a “Bid to Save Christ Church” auction has now been planned for this December at the prestigious Sheppard’s Irish Auction House in Co Laois.

Responding to a call for help, managing director Michael Sheppard explained that they are now accepting donations for the auction.

The public auction will take place on December 16 and will be streamed live to attract a wide cross-section of bidders.

Glenn Close leads an adept, uncompromising cast in Albert Nobbs, which had its premiere here last night at the Telluride Film Fest in the Galaxy Theater. Because the film, and many of its cast members, have been deliberately kept under wraps, no one knew what to expect. We all assumed we would know what we were going to get but this is a film unlike any other you’ve likely seen. You never quite know where it’s headed and it offers some startlingly beautiful scenes. Close is headed for her sixth Oscar nomination with this her most difficult and accomplished role to date. – Awards Daily

Directing his first period piece, Garcia does a fine job of evoking the era, while only partially managing to convey the circumstances that make Nobbs such a magnet for misery. “Albert Nobbs” is relatively unique among cross-dressing stories in that it takes the form of tragedy rather than full-blown farce. A wee bit of humor would have gone a long way in this dour affair, and the few glimpses we get of Victorian vice (an alcoholic butler sneaking sips from guests’ half-finished glasses, the sight of Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a wealthy viscount with same-sex persuasions) are scarcely enough to salvage the slow-motion inevitability of looming misfortune. – Variety

The screenplay hints there could be more though such as the secrets so many of the characters hide from each other including the Doctor’s affair with another maid, the rich “womanizing” lord (a completely wasted Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who plays more in bed with his best mate than with the ladies or the despised hotel owner (Pauline Collins) who is barely keeping the business a float. This theme could have worked under another director, but these tangents almost fly pointlessly by Garcia’s eye. – HitFix
