Paris airport case settled

An unfortunate incident for Jonathan in June 2009 has finally been settled by the courts in Paris today. In an attempt to provide accurate information on the sentence to counter some of the misinformation out there, the following is from the AFP (Agence France-Presse):

Actor Rhys Meyers sentenced for drunken French fracas

AFP – A French court Wednesday handed Irish film star Jonathan Rhys Meyers a one-month suspended sentence and ordered him to pay a 1,000-euro fine for a drunken altercation with police at a Paris airport.

The 34-year-old actor, known for his roles in BBC television production “The Tudors” and the films “Match Point” and “Bend It Like Beckham”, was not in court for the ruling.

Rhys Meyers was arrested in a bar at Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport in June 2009 and charged with being drunk and disorderly after he struck a barman and insulted three police officers.

The court in suburban Bobigny said Rhys Meyers was “extremely aggressive” and threatened to pay to have the officers and their families killed.

After being taken into custody and sobering up, he apologised to the officers and said he was suffering from alcoholism, the court said. He admitted to being drunk but said he did not fully recall the events.

The court said Rhys Meyers had compensated his victims in the case, without providing details.

His lawyer Vincent Toledano had pleaded for the court to dismiss the charges, saying Rhys Meyers was “a fragile man” and a “fairly weak person” who “suffers… from his demons.”

He later described the sentence as “harsh” and said Rhys Meyers had been “harmed by his fame”.

An Irish court in 2007 dropped similar charges against Rhys Meyers after he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly at Dublin airport.

The JRMfansite does not condone the behavior reported about this two year old incident in Paris. Alcoholism is a disease but it does not excuse his behavior and he’s now been punished. Let’s all hope this is now well behind him. The JRMfansite continues to support and wish Jonathan much love, peace, and serenity.

I understand why you said he has to be responsible for his actions, but he is sick. He needs to get well, and it seems that the more fame, fortune and attention thrown his way just makes his illness worse. Of course, I’d like to see more of Jonathan, but I want to see a healthy Jonathan, not a miserable one! Maybe he just needs to quit being an actor for a while, get away from his demons (wouldn’t a nice farm in the Cork countryside with his horse be nice?) and just figure out what makes him really happy and how to stay sober and healthy.

This is just my opinion. I know we all want him to get better and only he can decide how that is going to happen. I wish him the best of luck! We’re all here to support him!

We all have demons of some sort…but when the demons start taking over your life then something must be done about it. I had terrible demons…but I found a way out after many years of suffering and trying to get out of the hole. I found an amazing therapist/doctor/professor who was very experienced in treating abuse/assault victims with a new age therapeutic tool called EMDR. It works on anxieties/phobias/addictions, etc and is very easy to do with the guidance of an educated professional. People who are depressed are unable to process negative emotions and fall into a “hole” and sometimes self medicate with alcohol/drugs. Most suffer from PTSD and is curable with this form of therapy. Addictions seem to fall away…so here’s hopin’ for the best for JRM. Would be great if he actually read this. With EMDR there is hope for everyone…Take care and be good to yourselves…
