Congratulations Jonathan for winning Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Movie for “Elvis” at last night’s Golden Globe Awards! “Elvis” did not win any other awards. And “Match Point” came away empty handed as well. His reaction to winning from Virgin:
Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers said on Tuesday that getting a Golden Globe was like winning the FA Cup.
The 28-year-old scooped the Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Film Made for Television title at the Los Angeles awards ceremony for his performance in Elvis.
“It’s like scoring a goal for Arsenal in the FA Cup to win it. It does big things for your career. When you look at the people I was up against – Kenneth Branagh, Donald Sutherland and Ed Harris – they’re all very accomplished actors,” he said.
The actor said he had been shocked to win the award.
“You kind of dream that you’ll win but you never think it will become a reality,” he said.
You can hear more of his reaction talking to RTE radio. More from Variety (including details on “August Rush”):
Jonathan Rhys Meyers, winner for best actor in a miniseries or telefilm for his role as the King in CBS’ “Elvis,” seemed grateful that he didn’t have to do his own singing for the role. “Elvis did all his own singing in it,” he remarked. He won’t be so fortunate in his next role. He’ll portray the father of a 10-year-old music prodigy who attends Juilliard in a film titled “August Rush,” from screenwriter Kirsten Sheridan, the daughter of writer-director-producer Jim Sheridan. “I’m not as talented a musician as the ones I play,” he said. “I’m playing a musician in my next film, and I have to actually sing, which means plug your earplugs.” He gave credit to all those who worked on the film and worked on behalf of him. “No one person wins an award. There are lots of people working behind me — agent, manager, publicist — working behind the scenes day and night to do all the things I’m unable to do to get me to this position.”
Expect plenty of coverage of the Golden Globes in all the entertainment news programs this week as well as magazines. Lastly, Jonathan is featured in the latest issue of People Magazine and there’s an article and photo spread in the February 2006 issue of Interview Magazine.
